Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation (TDCC) has dedicated to social welfare charity for quite a long time. Apart from improving its businesses, TDCC also echoes with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shoulders corporate social responsibility (CSR). Recently, TDCC has been connected to art projects for charity, taking real action to help pass down local traditions and art. TDCC invites clients to watch Father, a documentary which depicts a legendary story of Chen Xi-Huang, a glove puppet master. In addition, TDCC Brainstorming Contemporary Arts Award is a national event that encourages students to create artwork and the public to appreciate aesthetics.
To fulfill CSR and draw the public’s attention to local art, TDCC cordially invites clients to movie theaters to watch Father, a documentary about Chen Xi-Huang, a glove puppet manipulator, and his legendary life story. The audience can feel the essence, depth, and glamor of local art. The protagonist of Father is Chen Xi-Huang, the eldest son of Li Tian-Lu, the founder of “As if It’s in Your Grasp Troupe.” When Chen was 79 years old, he founded “Chen Xi-Huang Glove Puppetry Troupe” with his Tiandu Marshal Puppet, the God of Troupe, stored in a “red box (the Chinese name of Father),” and tried his best to pass down the tradition of glove puppetry. Yang, Li-Zhou, the director of the documentary, uses the big screen to display the flexibility and delicacy of Chen’s skills of glove puppetry. The film also depicts the complex between Chen and his father—they were like father and son, as well as master and apprentice. The documentary shows the audience the prosperity and stagnation of traditional glove puppetry. Father not only records the sense of responsibility of a manipulator, but it also guides the general public to ponder over the importance of local cultural preservation.
Aside from traditional art heritage, TDCC also values sprouting local art. This year, the 1st TDCC Brainstorming Contemporary Arts Award collected art pieces all over Taiwan to encourage young students to convey their care and sentiment for society through art creation. The event received a lot of submissions which went through three rounds of review, including preliminary, second, and final reviews. In the end, ten pieces were selected, including the Masterpiece, Special Jury Prize, and Prize of Excellence. TDCC is designing the proper exhibition area in the office for clients and visitors of Taiwan Stock Museum to appreciate these pieces which are full of sentiment and aesthetics.
Sherman Lin, TDCC Chairman & CEO, said that art was an essential part of life and an indispensable element for cultural heritage. Art helps people care for things other than utilitarian and start to experience inspirational moments in life. TDCC has cared for art development and understood the predicament of local culture. As a result, TDCC urges the public to support Father by going to the theater to witness the unique glamour of glove puppetry. TDCC also hopes that, in the future, more enterprises will join hands to cooperate with the art circle, creating a liberal and creative social atmosphere for a better humanistic Taiwan.
